American Education Week

Last week teachers and students celebrated American Education Week. All of the teachers were invited to the art room to make a quilt square about why they teach.  Thanks to all those who participated!

We have a pretty artsy bunch here at Southdale! What do you think?

5th Grade Watercolor Paintings

Students studied the famous Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer. Durer believed in the importance of looking at nature carefully and paying attention to details. Albrecht Durer chose mainly to work with watercolor because he could travel with the supplies he used easily.

5th graders arranged their own nature items into an interesting composition, sketched them and painted them with watercolor.

Caught Doing Art

Sixth grader Ana Starbeck has been caught doing art! Check out those fingernails! I spotted this walking art project in class. Ana said she painted her fingernails white, added rubbing alcohol, and pressed on small pieces of newspaper. What a great idea Ana!

1st Grade Self Portraits

First graders at Southdale have been working hard on these self portraits! We started our project by folding our paper and talking about the proportions and fractions of the face, this way everyone drew their eyes, nose, mouth and ears in the right location. Next, we looked in mirrors to add personal details like freckles, glasses, and earrings. Finally we used markers and crayons to make these drawings come to life!
